A smooth curved contour of the building is defined by the arrangement of the trees - the building bypasses them with its bionic form. The building enters into a dialogue with its surroundings and the preservation of trees maintains the modern respect for nature ideas. The timber-framed facades with glass filling continue the theme of nature preservation in their original condition. The glass volume of the building just like dissolves into trees and becomes indistinguishable among them.

The shape of the building sets the direction for the interior concept. The smooth shaped rooms are picturesquely dispersed in the volume of the building so that the internal partitions do not adjoin the external walls. This solution enhances the visual permeability of the building and blurs the line between the exterior and interior. The meeting rooms are surrounded by glass partitions with varying transparency and the ability to transform from one to three rooms. The walls of the utility and technical rooms are finished with wood panels.

Status
Concept

Location
Moscow, Serebryany Bor

Area
1 000 sq m</turbo:content>

The structure is also made of wood. Of course it is made from local wood, still the most affordable building material in Russia.

The cottage's layout is in the shape of an elongated rectangle, and the architect has placed it crosswise and in the middle of the rectangular plot, setback from the fence at the minimum distance dictated by standards. In this way, the ten acres are visually split into two non mutually-dependent areas: a small front garden and a yard in the back. Facing the cottage is a small guest house and a tidy tool shed hidden by a fence.

The main house has two floors, but from the majority of perspectives this cannot be seen. This is due to the fact that almost all of the top-level areas are illuminated by skylights, while the slope of the gable roof is minimal. Under the overhang on the main facade, the completely blank wooden surfaces are visually striking upon entering the plot of land, and even more so from the street, creating a feeling of a totally introverted volume. Also magnifying this image are the shutters, which for all windows are made from the same wood as the facades, and painted in the same light gray color.

The shutters snugly close all openings. In such an enclosed form the house would have looked like a perfect parallelepiped, if not for the terraces at both its ends and the deep square niche of the main entrance (the glazed door also has shutters). The internal layout of the house is built along the intersection of two axes: placed longitudinally are the living room and studio, each facing its own terrace, and crosswise is the entrance hall and the staircase located in front of it. Directly opposite the front door there is a small window looking out into the garden: even from the street this effective viewing opening is clearly visible. The themes of a monochrome design for the facades and the openness / closeness was meticulously developed in all the interiors as well.

There is no cabinet furniture, only built in, serving as a visual continuation of the walls. This technique allowed for the even quite modest in size bedrooms to appear spacious, while emphasizing to the best effect the dimensions of the living room and studio. The most difficult part in the practical implementation of this design was joining the boards of the walls, floor, and ceiling without using traditional fastening corners which are deemed essential for moldings, planks and cornices of any wooden interior. In this house all such junctions have been taken care of with the use of specially-prepared angled bars. As for the interior's palette, the finishing in all the rooms is the same gray (only a few shades lighter than the one used for the facades), working as a perfect backdrop for the rare colored accents, such as the orange couch or the yellow flowerpot.

Status
Built

Client
Alexey Ilin

Location
Moscow Region

Area
210 sq m</turbo:content>

The surfaces of these facades are covering with the ceramic panels with printed fragments of Alexey Ilin’s paintings on it. Alexey has been enjoyed architectural graphics for many years and for him this is the way of capturing his impressions during travelling. For the project of the residential complex "Filatov Lug" the architect selected paintings that are dedicated to the images of towers in the historical buildings of European cities - Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berlin, Hamburg. "The high-rise dominants of European cities are both recognisable symbols and urban landmarks. New residential buildings will be unique due to the images of these symbols and this approach will create a memorable system of landmarks in this residential complex. This is important when the urban planning environment is created from the scratch," the author comments.

Status
Built

Client
GK "Ingrad"

Location
New Moscow, Kartmazovo

Area
166 050 sq m</turbo:content>

All the facades is made of inexpensive reliable materials such as brick tiles, porcelain stoneware, metal cassettes and glassfiber reinforced concrete.

Landscape design is connected with the facades design. Both the typical geometry and the facades rhythm are literally reflected on the ground, so each street, yard and square looks like a single piece of art.

The project is designed in collaboration with Project-2018

Status
Concept (The Winner)

Client
The Government of Moscow

Location
Moscow, Babushkinskiy district

Area
244 ha</turbo:content>

The main idea of the project is to integrate the architecture seamlessly into the landscape while treating nature with care. The architecture of the main building volume follows the natural lines of the hill, and all structures on the site are positioned to preserve as many existing trees as possible. The concert hall is placed on the slope itself, with the cantilevered part of the building echoing the shape of a natural terrace, where an observation deck with picturesque views is arranged.

Thanks to the semi-enclosed configuration, the site develops its own microclimate with a botanical garden and artificial ponds that form the main axis of the area, along which the primary pedestrian path runs. It is also possible to walk along the entire length of the building through an open gallery that provides access to the spa, indoor pool, hotel, restaurants, and medical center. Entrances to the apartments are placed on the outer side of the building.

As a result, the complex becomes a continuous landscape journey, where architecture supports rather than dominates its natural surroundings.

Status - Concept
Year - 2021
Area - 100 000 sq m</turbo:content>

According to the urban design concept by KCAP, a riverside theme is meant to be reflected in the façade design. The finishing elements are inspired by river imagery - sails, reeds, and piers. The ground floors are finished in natural marble and granite, while the typical floors are executed in light-colored architectural concrete. Buildings with horizontal elements alternate with those featuring vertical elements. Thanks to this approach, there is no sense of monotony - each side of the courtyard faces a different building.

The project is designed in collaboration with Project-2018

Status: Constructed
Year: 2021-2025
Client: ETALON GROUP
General designer: EtalonProject
Location: Moscow, Avtozavodskaya street
Area: 110 000 sq m</turbo:content>

These plots are part of an integrated development area, which includes ALIA Business and Business+ class residential complexes with social infrastructure facilities and public facilities: Rostech City Class A business park, Chkalov Arena Sport complex, apartment complex. A master plan for the entire area was developed by SOM "Skidmore, Owings & Merrill", which laid down the main principles of development: the placement of different types of residential buildings - towers, block-type houses, sectional buildings, as well as the creation of a central park inside the residential complex, overlooking the coastal park.

The competition project proposes to continue the main principles of a diverse typology of buildings and to show this idea in the waterfront quarters.

Plots contain block-type houses, sectional house and towers. In areas with towers, the yard space is formed by retail and open walking galleries on the ground floor. Quarter houses, sectional houses and towers on different plots are also designed differently, but simultaneously it has one theme – a river: each building inspired by the river and it explains naming of each plot.

The terraced variable-story buildings and the towers of different heights create a wave-like dynamic silhouette from the river side Terraced houses, standing in the depths of the sections of the first line, also form a wavy line in the background. Thanks to this solution, picturesque views, unlike each other, open up along the entire path along the complex.

The main principle of building development is to create the maximum number of apartments and summer spaces with views of the river and the park, for houses and the first and second lines.
And the creation of a variety of silhouettes of buildings, typologies of courtyards and quarters, various solutions for balconies, terraces and loggias creates a unique offer on the real estate market.

The project is designed in collaboration with Project-2018

Status - Concept
Year - 2021
Client - ASTERUS
Location - Moscow, Volokolamskoe highway
Area - 267 700 sq m</turbo:content>

The idea of designing these spaces is connected with the preparation of the audience's perception of the city promenade area in the amusement park. Despite the fact that the main object is an amusement park, visitors first pass-through grandiose malls that imitate the streets of recognizable European cities.

The design of the station uses the author's interpretation of city views, made in a mixed technique of watercolor and graphics. Alexey Iiin, head of the company, has been working in this painting technique for a long time and is a laureate and winner of several international competitions. For all areas of the station and the exterior of the lobbies, works are performed with views of several recognizable cities. Printing is done on metal or ceramic panels, as well as on glass for stained glass. A similar experience was implemented by the author on a larger scale on the facades of the Filatov Lug residential complex. In the process of implementation, the printing technology and the preparation of a template according to sketches were worked out.

The proposed design is unique, but at the same time, it is based on the traditions of the Moscow metro, where monumental panels and mosaics, stained-glass windows, custom-made lamps and other decorative elements have always been an integral part of the artistic concept. The use of modern printing technologies makes it possible to create a vivid image of full-color images on a dark background, while the main design theme is directly related to the location of the station and becomes part of the Dream Island.

The architecture of the main lobby is inspired by the circular subway lobbies of the 20th century.
A logo was also developed for the station.

The work was carried out by Alexey Ilin's architectural studio.
Preliminary lighting design by SpectorLab.

Status - Concept
Year - 2022
Location - Moscow, Andropova Avenue
Area - 10 000 sq m</turbo:content>

From the western, eastern and southern sides, the site is surrounded by administrative and industrial buildings, and the northern side of the site overlooks the railway of the Kazan direction.

The main idea of the concept is related to the close proximity to the railway. The shape of the building, materials and landscaping are connected with railway aesthetics. The smooth shapes of the corners of the upper part of the building follow the shapes of the carriages, while the facade decoration with titanium-zinc panels supports this concept. All facades, except for the northern one, have stained-glass windows 2 meters high and metal ventilation elements 30 cm wide. The northern facade opens to the railway with translucent structures.

The building has 5 floors, 2 of which have mezzanines, thanks to which spacious rooms with high ceilings and a good view are formed along the northern facade.
On the ground floor there is a lobby with a meeting area and a coffee shop. The shape of the sofas in the lobby and the bar in the coffee shop correspond to the shape of the building. Also on the ground floor are the administration, utility rooms and an office with a spacious meeting room.

The entrance to the parking lot is designed from Perevedenovsky Lane, as well as the main entrance to the building. Both entrances are located taking into account comfortable accessibility with respect to the transport and the pedestrian routes. Sidewalks and roads are covered with the same paving, with linear metal elements and LED lamps integrated in it. Metal inserts are reminiscent of the patterns of railroad switches, while linear lights were chosen to represent the image of a train speeding through the night.

The project is designed in collaboration with Project-2018

Status - Design stage
Year - 2022
Location - Moscow, Perevedenovskiy lane
Area - 9 000 sq m</turbo:content>

In the design of the surrounding Soviet-era metro stations, not only is there no mention of the estate, but despite the name "Tsaritsyno", the design of the station of the same name has a completely clear revolutionary anti-monarchist character.

Creating a new station and abstracting from political topics, I would like to offer a modern interpretation of the architectural techniques of the estate. First of all, these are rhythmic white vertical frames of windows and openings against the background of a terracotta wall, a pattern of rosettes and patinated copper spiers of roofs. The theme of the rhythm of light elements became the main theme in the design concept of the station. However, rosettes of various shapes also play an important role; this technique was used at many historical stations and rethought in a modern interpretation. Huge rosettes between the tracks hide the columns and create interesting views of the other side of the platform - through them we can see the trains and the decoration of the opposite wall. In the rosettes of the walls facing directly onto the platform, there are lamps with a soft matte glow to match the color of the patinated copper of the roofs of the Tsaritsyno estate.

Status - Concept
Year - 2022
Location - Moscow, Tsaritsyno
Area - 10 000 sq m</turbo:content>

The park is based on dividing the territory into thematic lands, each of which is dedicated to either past achievements or future achievements of Russia in space. One of the main design tasks was to reflect the legend of each theme land of the park in the architecture and landscaping, to make each land recognizable and unique, but at the same time to create design elements that unite all parts of the park into a single whole. The layout of the territory is based on the scenario of visitor movement.

The main entrance to the park is a portal with a diameter of 10 meters, leading to the "parallel reality" of the theme park. The teleportation effect is enhanced by a screen showing the galaxy. On the way to the main pavilion, visitors pass between the service facilities of the entrance group, cafes and souvenir shops. Each land offers rides and entertainment related to space or certain literary works: "Captains of the Future", "Alice's Adventures", "The Mystery of the Third Planet", etc.

The Vostok-1 pavilion reflects its main theme in its facade solutions - Gagarin's flight on the ship of the same name. The walls are finished with metal panels, shiny columns, smooth rounded shapes of openings, furniture, rooms and equipment convey the atmosphere of the time of Yuri Gagarin's flight, and the monochrome range of interiors in combination with glossy surfaces and soft linear lighting conveys the feeling of being on a spaceship.

In front of the pavilion, there is a central square leading to the other themed lands through special portals made in a single design: curved tunnels with metal trim, differing from each other in the color of the backlight and infographics on the inner surfaces

Idea and functional concept authors - Red Square

Status - Concept
Year - 2024
Location - Saratov oblast
Area - 22 500 sq m
</turbo:content>

As you move along Bagration Avenue, a framing effect reveals a panoramic view of the Moscow City skyscrapers — an iconic and expressive silhouette of the city.

At the base of the complex lies a column-free space housing the transport hub. It brings together a metro station, the MCD line, a bus terminal, and pedestrian crossings over the railway tracks and the avenue. This is more than just an infrastructure node — it's a true urban public space.

The main hall volume is a modern interpretation of early 20th-century railway stations. This large-span structure not only serves a utilitarian purpose but also impresses with its architectural scale. Inside, there is an exhibition with model airplanes (a nod to the aviation plant that once occupied the site), cafés, and areas for rest. On the upper levels, sports and entertainment facilities offer panoramic views of the city and Moscow City.

The towers accommodate a variety of uses — from business to public functions — carefully selected based on an analysis of the surrounding urban context and neighborhood needs. Polished aluminum is the primary material, used on façades, platform roofs, and interior finishes. It visually and stylistically unifies the entire complex. The design code is reflected in every detail: the distinctive window shape of the tower is echoed in floor plans, paving patterns, lighting fixtures, and hardware.

The building features a unique, high-tech structural system developed by the project’s structural engineers. First, the two towers are erected. Then, the connecting levels are lifted by cranes to a height of 250 meters — all while traffic on the avenue and MCD line continues uninterrupted. The main hall is assembled on the ground as a spatial truss and carefully shifted into place from both sides using temporary supports.

On the rooftop, landing pads are provided for air taxis and drones. In the future, the journey from the airport to Moscow City will take just a few minutes.

In collaboration with Bureau-V, GRADTRANSPROEKT, PROJECT2018, and HIGHLIGHT Architecture.

Status - Concept
Year - 2024
Location - Moscow
Area - 8 ha
Client - JSC "New Concession Company"
</turbo:content>

The concept proposes restoring the cinema's role as the country's central film venue and a home for film festivals: a large screen extends from the interior hall onto the façade facing Pushkinskaya Square. The proposal also envisions the reconstruction of the balustrade and descents to Pushkinskaya Square, refreshing the perception of the ensemble as a whole. The façades are clad in metal panels with a pronounced reflective effect: the building literally dissolves into the surrounding historic architecture, shifting with the city, light, and time of day.
</turbo:content>

But when I was six, I did it anyway...

A quote from Darren Aronofsky’s film Pi

At first glance, it may seem trite to quote The Four Books of Architecture—the canonical work of the great Andrea Palladio, which shaped the course of world architecture for nearly five centuries. Trite, perhaps, and outdated. Yet it is difficult to argue with his assertion that “the most beautiful and most perfect forms, from which all others derive their proportions, are the circle and the square.”

His famous Villa Rotonda in Vicenza, much like another iconic Renaissance building—the villa of Andrea Mantegna in Mantua—is, in essence, a meditation on the quadrature of the circle. This ancient geometric problem asks one to construct a square equal in area to a given circle using only a compass and a straightedge. For centuries, the finest minds wrestled with this puzzle, all in vain. Finally, in 1882, the German mathematician Ferdinand von Lindemann (perhaps an ancestor of Till, who knows?) proved that the problem is impossible to solve, owing to the transcendental nature of the number π (pi).

At this point, it is important to acknowledge the mystical and philosophical dimension of this geometric paradox, particularly in light of the symbolic meaning traditionally attributed to the two figures. In Christianity—and not only there—the circle is associated with truth, perfection, eternity, the celestial realm, the Kingdom of Heaven; the square, by contrast, symbolizes order, wholeness, materiality, and the earthly world. Consequently, the union of the circle and the square, or the transformation of one into the other, signifies the connection between heaven and earth and refers to a fundamental religious doctrine according to which “the invisible heavenly world and the visible earthly world are united in God as their common creator.”

One might therefore suggest that the ambition to solve the quadrature of the circle carried within it something almost blasphemous—a challenge to the divine itself. All the better, then, that it turned out to be a dead end for the human intellect.

As a result, the quadrature of the circle became a metaphor for the futile search for truth, for attempts to attain perfection in an imperfect world, to transcend the limits of sensory experience. The number π acquired a dubious reputation as a key to the mysteries of the universe and is now perceived almost as an alchemical symbol.

It is no coincidence that π—the sixteenth letter of the ancient Greek alphabet—gave its name to Darren Aronofsky’s cult film about Max Cohen, a paranoid schizophrenic and brilliant mathematician who seeks a universal pattern in stock market fluctuations. He discovers a mysterious 216-digit number and, in the process, descends into madness. He becomes convinced that the sequence generated by his computer contains the true name of God. His salvation from insanity comes in the form of a drill driven into his own temple.

Throughout the film, the protagonist repeatedly utters the phrase that serves as the epigraph to this manifesto. As one might guess, “looking at the Sun” is a metaphor for the pursuit of truth—which is also God. Cohen believes he has finally seen it and is punished for his audacity by being deprived of his sight, that is to say, of his reason.

Truth—like perfection, because it is perfect—is unknowable and unattainable. It is like the blinding surface of the Sun, ablaze with fire; like distant galaxies that captivate us with their almost mathematical beauty.

Yet nothing prevents us from imagining it.

Like Palladio, we consider the circle to be the most beautiful and perfect form. That is why we chose to represent the ideal as a mirrored sphere. It is enclosed beneath a dome and can be walked around in a circle, yet there is no single vantage point from which it can be seen in its entirety.

That is precisely the point.

In Bangkok, Thailand, there is the Temple of the Reclining Buddha—Wat Pho—where a gigantic gilded figure of the Buddha is housed within a relatively confined, albeit magnificent, interior. Visitors can study individual fragments of the sculpture in extraordinary detail, yet they are unable to take in the figure as a whole. We adopted the same principle because we have no desire for our guests to share the fate of the protagonist of Pi (just kidding).

In the adjoining room, visitors will encounter an absurdist video artwork inspired by Soviet television news broadcasts and the work of the British comedy troupe Monty Python. It presents an imagined alternative reality whose inhabitants, to their misfortune, have actually achieved perfection.

Project Curator: Anatoly Belov
Concept Author: Alexey Ilin
In collaboration with: Ortiga Development
</turbo:content>
